CD’s GREAT MUSIC

By fred | February 28, 2008

Don Canary told me this story:

I’m going to relate this to you as it happened. I know there’s a story somewhere in the following, and it could even turn into a continuing story, if you agree. Nancy and I moved to San Juan Capistrano in April, 2003. There may be other places on this planet as great as this area, but we certainly feel that we’ve found heaven on earth. We’re four miles inland and we go to Dana Point often for their fine restaurants. San Juan Creek winds up a small canyon from the ocean and is a direct conduit for ocean breezes in the afternoons. We live in a three bedroom condo and we’re located directly above the 16th green. This is a perfect spot for perfect weather year-round, and that makes us happy!

A little over two years ago we decided to join the San Juan Capistrano Seniors Club because they have an exercise class that meets three times a week at 8:30 a.m. – Monday, Wednesdays and Fridays. We first tried the commercial-type gyms, but they were too fast and furious for us! The Seniors Club was more our style. Our leader is a very attractive German gal – Barbara – who is in her 70’s, but doesn’t look it, if you get what I mean. There’s about 30 to 50 of us who meet regularly, but the core group is about 35. We do 52 exercises in 45 minutes, so we’re moving pretty good. They play a cd while we exercise and this is where I come in.

When we first started they had been playing the same music every session every week for some time. We got tired of it after only a couple of weeks! I went to the lady-in-charge – Ruth – who is in her 80’s, but still very active. I told her that I could create a new cd with different music to play if she agreed. Did she ever! They were all sick of the same old thing over and over again. You know how that goes.

Anyway, I had been “making” cd’s for a long time. I had down-loaded a ton of music from the inter-net since before when we lived in Covina, and had stored it on my computer. You name it, I had it – from the classics to operetta to musicals to all the big bands, country and western, etc.

You talk about feeding candy to a baby! When I showed up at the next meeting with my new cd that consisted of big band music, the bunch of seniors went crazy! They loved it, and still do. I have created 60 cd’s over the interval and just stopped because I decided that was enough – more than enough. Some say they come for the music – not the exercise.

The first 39 cd’s are mostly close to 60 minutes each – more music than we can listen to during our sessions. Beginning with number 40 through 60, I wised-up and made them close to 45 minutes each. I did something else, too. This something else might be at the heart of how you could use this information. I found a web site that lists, according to them, “THE MOST REQUESTED SONGS OF ALL TIMES”!

And they list them the year, beginning before 1900. I’ll get the exact title of that web site so you can use it too – to follow.

It’s sort-of like the old Hit Parade! Listing number 1 first and so-on down the list.

Anyway, I began making each cd contain only music from that particular year – say 1930 – and the next one for 1931 – then 1932 and so on until I reached 1970 – then I quit. Not that there isn’t good music starting in 1970 – I just figured that with 60 cd’s, we had enough.

Which songs did I use? My choice. Everyone likes them, and I always consulted with Nancy before burning the final project. She has excellent taste and I let her be the final judge. (Although sometimes I’d sneak one or two in there that I liked better than she did).

That’s it: The Most Requested Hit Songs of All Times – Type that on your search bar and you’ve got it!

I’m going to quit typing for now. but you’ve got the gist of where I’m going with this. But I’ll be back, there’s more to follow.

Don
