IT IS NOT ALWAYS THE LOW PRICE THAT SELLS
By fred | June 19, 2008
I know that a number of you getting this are also selling on eBay. I have spent my life in merchandising. Mainly at the wholesale level - importing food and beverages from Europe, did that most of my life. Mostly price was so important, the lower the better, assuming the product was the same and quality.
So, using that same theory, I sold ladies costume jewelry in my eBay store (costumejewelryetc). Funny thing, some extremely nice, high quality jewelry such as the semi precious stone jewelry, black onyx, hematile, etc. did not sell. I could not understand this, I had a fantastic source I was buying from so I could pass on prices that were to die for, but it was not selling. Then another seller told me “Fred you are selling to cheap, too low, people cannot believe the prices are for quality.” So—I doubled the prices on the entire line - he was right - everything in the natural stone line is selling - even a few bracelets will have to be reordered as they are sold out already and this at double the profit.
So - it is a lesson - if you have a product that is very low in price, check on similiar items being sold on eBay first. Do not price your product way below the competition, just a little, you may find that it will sell far better. Selling on the Internet is a new way of life, and the how and way to do it can be far different than any other selling.
One thing , if you sell on eBay or any other Internet site, make sure your picture is a perfect as it can be. Folks like very light pictures, far better to put more light and use lighter backgrounds that dark backgrowns. Also if making photos of bright silver or bright gold on your color scanner mute the photo as much as you can - this will help hold down the ‘green’ that shows in photos of silver and gold.
If you have any problems with selling on eBay let me know, maybe I can help.

Hey Fred,
I got hooked up with a guy who has been dealing in antiques for many years, knows NOTHING about computers and needed someone to sell his wares on E-bay. I’m selling as many as 25 items per day now. It’s amazing what sells and what doesn’t. You are right on about photos. Check out some of mine at E-bay item #380038947855 or in my store.

I looked at your store, Wow, it looked cooool. Interesting that you can sell that much of your items. I guess a lot of folks still want to shave the old fashioned way. I note that you have the revolving show deal, how much is you eBay store fee monthly. Mine is the cheaper one, of $30 a month, plus listing charges. Paying more for your store my question is do you feel the revolving item display gets you more business, seems like it would, just want to hear your comments.
Take care old buddy, Fred
