ARE WE BECOMING A NATION OF WHIMPS??
By fred | June 28, 2008
“Are we becoming a nation of whimps?” — my answer is yes, with a big YES!
You may say, “BS!” Let me make my case. Take a small instances. You call a company, your stock broker for instance, but it is most companies of any size. An automatic voice asks you five or ten things and you are supposed to punch a number to access subject. Hey now you hope you will talk to a live person. Ha, but do you get a live person? – hell no! Another automated voice asks you another 10 questions, and so it goes. If lucky after wasting 15 minutes you may or may not get who you wanted in the first place. Why is this?– because most companies can save a few cents with a minimum wage employee by using the automation. So excutives making hundreds of dollars a day, where time is so precious, have to waste 15 minutes, or more, out of their day to save the company they are calling just a few cents in comparison. AND WE ACCEPT IT!
What brought on this subject is my recent battles with eBay and my online jewelry store – costumejewelryetc. When I came home from a doctors visit the other day, I received a message that a bunch of my items had been pulled from eBay selling. Why? Seems I have some words inside my listing that some “Worm” found that is double selling. All the offending words were – was a list of items I sell on eBay. This when just a month ago a eBay advisor lady spent a half hour going over a bunch of my listings on the phone and approved them all, the same headings that they now say are wrong.
So– this “worm” of eBay dumped hours of my work, time in listing, WHEN their employee approved the items. The reason for my concern is that it takes at least fifteen minutes (or more) to list a item for sale, so about a 1,000 listings are at risk, think of the time it took– the hundreds of hours it took to list all those items. I pointed this out to these idiots in e-mail after e-mail, begged them to call me, as their chat stuff could not help. They finally stopped dumping listings and agreed to have a live person call me Monday.
Now this was not bad enough. I got e-mail after e-mail – threatening me like I was a very bad person, that they could dump me from eBay, suspend me, etc. etc. taking for granite that I was attempting some evil act. All this bad feeling could have been overcome by a nice phone call on the day they found something they felt was wrong, and ask me why it was there. THEN I could have told them that their person approved it.
I well remember when I had my import and distribution companies of imported foods and beverages– I ran those companies for almost 50 years. There was competition then, if you ever treated a customer like this, had a phone operation that was automatic, wasting customers time, if you ever sent them a letter that was not courteous, you would never sell that customer again. The customers had backbones back then–and would tell you to piss off, they would deal with your competition.
Of course, one problem today is that there are few options. The big business, especially like eBay is difficult to quit because there is not another that has the traffic, the customers, the public using it like they do. So you have to use them–even if you hate them to death. Scary , as they could be loved with just a little bit of effort, less threats and more customer support by live people.
Of course, these are minor matters compared to national matters. We are still whimps, in my opinion. Take our ass of a president. The Republican congress was extremely quick to try and impeach President Clinton – his offense was having sex with another consenting adult. WOW, of course he lied trying to save his marriage, something most American males would do if in a like situation, but to the Republicans he was evil.
Now we have a president Bush, that has lied to us, time and time again, easy to prove. His lies lead to thousands of people dying, actually over one million Iraqs and over 4,000 of our brave men and women, plus countless disabled for life, lives disrupted, our nation in the toilet and so on. Millions and billions, mishandled, paid out on no bid contracts. Bush and Cheney have our nation in debt like never before, we are facing the worst recession/depression since the 1920’s and our Democratic congress hasn’t the guts to begin impeachment. If I killed one person I would go to prison for life or die in a electric chair yet this man and his vice-president are still free and will soon retire on big bucks for their total destruction of our nation and our way of life.
I ask you again– are we a nation of whimps??? Or have we become a nation of whimps??? Sorry, at almost 80 years of age I have to say “YES” and I certainly include myself here.
Those guys or ours – that landed on the Normanday beaches, the Islands of the Pacific, those that have died in Iraq in a war based on lies deserve more from those of us that are still alive. Did they fight for a nation of whimps??
How we can take our nation back from big business, from a failed government, gain our respect as individuals– this will take far more knowledge than I have. I will be gone in the next ten or so years, the odds are not good for a long life at 80 so it is for the younger Americans I fear for. They somehow will have to have the guts, the same fearlessness that our forefathers and those that died for our nation— to take it back. Can they???
O.K. I feel better, I spit it out! Am I wrong?? What do you think??
Will love to hear your views, one thing if all this does not make you mad as hell, you better check your blood pressure, you may not be alive.
Love ya, Uncle Fred
